Hello Escapee,

This is an important recall for both Canada and USA customers. 

We would like to formally notify USA Escape customers that Suburban has registered a NHTSA Recall #22E-035 for the SDS2 2 Burner Drop-in Cooktop.

In accordance with the United States NHTSA requirements, Escape Trailer Industries has also logged a NHTSA Vehicle Recall #22V-388

In accordance with Transport Canada requirements, Escape has logged a vehicle recall 2022-281 (Canada does not have a separate equipment recall requirement)

Who does this affect? 

All customers with the Suburban SDS2 Drop-In Cooktop. The Suburban SDS2 was the standard cooktop installed in Escape Trailers from approximately March 2018 - July 2021. This affects only the SDS2 and does not include any other cooktops or ovens installed by Escape in that period.

We have sent this communication to all customers regardless of cooktop/oven selection and completion date. If the above does not apply to you please disregard this message. 

RECALLED UNIT - Suburban SDS2 Drop- In Cooktop

Why is the SDS2 being recalled?

This issue is related to a potential failure that may occur at the aluminum burner tubes.

The internal aluminum burner tubes connecting the gas valves to the cooktop burners can fracture from excessive vibration or shock experienced through travel in an Escape RV. The burner tube could crack resulting in a leak of propane when the top burner gas valve is opened to use the appliance.

If ignited the propane could result in a fire and/or explosion which could result in personal injury.

What you need to do for a replacement from Suburban.

Suburban will send the new SDS2 to an authorized dealer/repair shop near you.

The replacement SDS2 has stainless steel tubing rather than aluminum tubes; otherwise it is an exact duplicate of the recalled unit.

US or Canadian customers follow the same process. You or your dealer must contact Suburban’s Customer Service Department at 423-775-2131 ext 7101, via email at orders@suburbanmfg.com or laborclaims@airxcel.com or on suburbanrv.com/contact/. In your message or call, reference the Suburban NHTSA Recall #22E-035 (they will not have the Escape NHTSA number).

Suburban will send the new SDS2 to an authorized dealer/repair shop for replacement at no cost. In the event that Suburban do not pay for labour, Escape will reimburse up to a maximum of 100 USD / 120 CAD. The customer will be reimbursed upon providing appropriate documentation in the form of a receipt.

What will Escape do?

Escape Trailer Industries will contact all affected customers with appropriate contact details for Suburban in order to request a replacement unit at no cost.

What other options do you have?

The other option is to purchase an alternate replacement cooktop from Escape. The two cooktops on offer are the Dometic D21 (2 Burner Cooktop) and the Eno 3 Burner Cooktop. Escape will provide a rebate of 100 USD / 120 CAD if you choose to purchase either of these units.

Shipment and tax extra, installation not included. 

This offer is time-limited and only available until December 31st, 2022.

If you choose to purchase a replacement cooktop directly from Escape installation is not included and must be arranged with an authorized repair shop/person.
